Velvet Blazer and Trouser Set

A blazer cut single-breasted and long enough to cover a hip, with a straight lapel and one button, in a green velvet that is deep enough to read as black until the light moves across it. The trousers are wide from the hip with a flat front and an elasticated waist at the back, so they sit on a real waist rather than a rumoured one. The set is two pieces: the draped top in the photograph is styled with it and is not part of the offer. The stall files the cloth as 金丝绒, its word for a pile velvet, and prints no composition — the entry keeps the fibre open rather than guessing between silk and viscose.

Why we chose it

Because a velvet suit sells in December as a party outfit and in January as a separates buy, and the emerald photographs as a much more expensive green than it is.

Care

• Hang velvet, never fold it — a fold crushes the pile and leaves a permanent band.
• Steam it from a distance rather than pressing; an iron flattens pile that cannot be raised again.
• Dry clean only once a season; velvet is not washed.
