Crystal Leaf Bracelet Watch

A twenty-millimetre oval case on a bracelet built from faceted crystal leaves, in red, green or purple — the three colours the frames show and the three the listing files. At this size the dial is almost incidental: the piece reads as a bracelet from across a room and only resolves into a watch at arm’s length, which is exactly what the crystal links are doing. The crystal is ordinary glass rather than mineral-hardened, and the jewellery clasp is copper rather than stainless steel, so the clasp is the part that will discolour first against skin; both facts are worth having before the piece is priced. A bracelet that tells the time

Cheap jewellery watches fail in two ways: the case is too big to sit beside a bracelet, or the bracelet is a strap with stones glued to it. This one makes the links the design and shrinks the dial to fit, so it can be sold from a jewellery case rather than a watch case — which is where the margin is.

Copper clasp, glass crystal

Two specifications drive what happens after the sale. Ordinary glass scratches sooner than mineral glass, and a copper clasp discolours against skin before a steel one does. Neither is a fault at this price; both belong in the line sheet, because a buyer who knows will order a care card with the goods instead of issuing refunds.
