Colour-Block One-Shoulder Sweatshirt Set

A sweatshirt cut across the body on the diagonal, so the fabric passes over one shoulder and under the other, held by a single strap at the top of the arm; the sleeve on the low side is dropped and roomy. It comes with a jogger in a grey marl that is the same in every colourway, elasticated at the waist and at the ankle, with a stripe of the sweatshirt colour running down the outside seam. That pairing is the sensible part: a shop can show seven colourways against one trouser and the rail still reads as a collection rather than as seven odd tops. Seven colours are filed — navy, cobalt, brick, wine, green, yellow, khaki — and the four photographed are the four that carry a rail. The stall labels the set Japanese-Korean casual on the same sheet where the title calls it European, so neither label is repeated here.

The diagonal is the whole design

Cut a sweatshirt straight and it is a sweatshirt. Cut it on the bias of the shoulder and it can be worn two ways — pulled up for a high asymmetric neck, or dropped for a cold shoulder — which is the difference between one garment a customer tries and one she buys twice. It is also the seam to check on a sample: every colour join carries the weight of the panel above it.

One grey trouser, seven tops

The jogger is the same grey in all seven colourways, which is why the set is worth quoting as a range rather than as a colour. A buyer taking ten units of each colour ends up with a rail that looks merchandised by someone, at the cost of one trouser development.

Why we chose it

Because it is a two-piece that photographs as one idea, and the asymmetric neck does the work a print would otherwise have to do.

Care

• Gentle machine wash, no bleach, low iron, and hang it to dry — the stall prints exactly that.
• Wash the set inside out; the colour block is a dyed panel and a hot wash bleeds it into the grey.
• Dry flat if you can. The jogger is heavy when wet and the hem stretches on a hanger.
