Ribbed Knit Halter Dress Set

Two pieces of the same fine ribbed knit. The dress is a narrow column that follows the body from a cut-away neckline — a high band at the throat with the shoulders open either side of it — down to an ankle-grazing hem, and it is sleeveless on its own. Over it go the sleeves: a pair of close-fitting tubes that flare into a full bell below the elbow, joined across the back, worn on or off the shoulder. Olive green is the only colour, which is the right call for a knit this ribbed, because the rib is doing the visual work and a print would fight it. The stall files no fibre at all — only a band for the main composition and one for the elastane — so nothing here claims wool, viscose or a percentage.

One yarn, two pieces, one price

The sleeves and the dress are knit from the same yarn on the same gauge, which is what makes a set read as one garment rather than as a dress with an afterthought. It is also why the two must be quoted together: a buyer who takes the dress alone has a sleeveless knit that only works two months of the year.

The neckline is the risk

A cut-away band at the throat holds its shape only if the rib is tight and the cast-off is firm. On a sample, pull the band gently sideways — if it gapes before it springs back, the whole dress will sit wrong. The stall sells this line domestically as well as through the platform, so stock moves; ask for a holding before a large order.

Why we chose it

Because a knit dress with a separate sleeve piece is the sort of thing a boutique cannot find at a trade show, and olive carries it past one season.

Care

• Hand wash cold and dry flat — a ribbed knit on a hanger grows a shoulder point that never comes out.
• Fold, never hang, and keep the sleeves flat so the bell does not take a crease.
• Store with the dress inside the sleeves to keep the two pieces together as a set.
